Dual affronts — one from the President of the United States and the other from a commentator in Russia — directed at Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni seem to be rallying at least a portion of her detractors in her favor.
Last week, US President Donald Trump – who has traditionally maintained a strong connection with Italy’s right-wing leader – criticized Meloni as “unacceptable” following her rebuttal to him regarding his remarks about Pope Leo XIV.
“She is the one who is unacceptable because she doesn’t care if Iran has a nuclear weapon and would blow up Italy in two minutes if it had the chance,” he stated to the Italian publication Corriere Della Sera. “I’m shocked by her. I thought she had courage.
I was mistaken.” The clash extended beyond the relationship between the US and Italy this week when Russian TV personality Vladimir Solovyov labeled her a “certifiable idiot” and a “disgrace to the human race” for her “betrayal” of Trump and her support for Ukraine. More information...
